4 Easy Ways To Update Your Bedroom

If you fancy making a change to your bedroom, but don’t necessarily want to completely redecorate, there are plenty of smaller tweaks that you can make. Here are just a few easy small changes that can make a big difference.

Bring in some checks and stripes

House Beautiful advises that checks and stripes are a big trend this year, and they are a super simple way to add a pop of colour and personality to your bedroom. They can be at once retro and modern with wide large bold stripes combined with classic pastel colours.

Go for striped or checked bedding, curtains, or cushions to bring some instant cheer and character to your room. The old rules about matching everything don’t apply, and in 2023 it’s fine to have a mixture of patterns and colours even if they create a slightly disruptive effect.

As long as you keep everything tied together with one or two consistent elements of colour, pattern, or line, some clashes can work really well.

Scalloped edges

Another nostalgic trend that is easy to introduce without a major overhaul is scalloped edges. This can be brought in with trims on blankets or throws, or other soft furnishings such as bedding or curtains. If you want to spend a little bit extra, you could make a feature of a scalloped headboard.

Contemporary florals

Floral designs have come a long way since the chintzy patterns that were so popular in the pre-war era. There are now plenty of ways to combine the charm and prettiness of floral designs with a more modern edge. One of the most popular looks right now is a big bold floral print with a limited palette of just two or three fresh colours.

This could be introduced with wallpaper, window dressings, bedding, or accessories such as cushions or lampshades if you just want to make a more discreet nod to the look.

If you want to add some more drama and individuality to your bedroom, you could go for a more gothic twist with dark and moody shades of navy and crimson. Lush and romantic without the tweeness of traditional florals, this is a strong look that really makes an impact.

Create a sanctuary

The bedroom as a sanctuary from the outside world is an idea that has very much taken hold of our imaginations, and there are lots of inspirational ideas out there. This is not just about design, but also about creating the perfect environment for a restorative sleep. Basics such as a comfortable mattress and a soft lighting scheme can make a huge difference.

If you are a light sleeper and easily disturbed by early summer dawns or outside light pollution, investing in some blackout curtains or blinds can be very helpful.

As for colour schemes, the traditional advice has been to opt for calming neutral tones. However, some people prefer warmer colour schemes which can be welcoming and more personal; it’s really just a matter of whatever works best for you.
