How To Style Scatter Cushions In Your Home

Scatter cushions are the perfect way to add some extra colour and interest to your living room sofa or bedroom. There is a huge variety of textures, patterns, and colours to choose from, and it can sometimes be difficult to decide what will work best. There are no rules of course, but if you are looking for some inspiration, here are a few ideas.

Pick out an accent colour

If you are not sure what colour to go for, take a look around at the rest of the décor in the room. If you prefer a minimalist aesthetic, you could pick similar colours to those already present, but with some variation of tone. For example, if you have pale neutrals, you might choose warm greys or alabaster tones.

Another approach is to pick out an accent colour, such as one that appears on the pattern of your curtains, lampshades, wall art, or rug, and choose this as the colour for your cushions. This will create a pleasing harmony in the décor of the room by tying everything together.

If you have mostly muted colours elsewhere, bright or bold cushions can be a great way to add a pop of colour to add some extra depth and interest to your room.

Create contrast with fabrics and textures

The fabric and texture of the cushion cover can add a lot to the appearance of your room. You could pick a finish that provides a contrast to your sofa, or go for variety with a mixture of cushion styles alternately placed. For example, chunky knits and tufted weaves will contrast nicely with smoother velvet or cotton cushions.

Get playful with patterns

Patterns can inject some instant personality into a room, especially if you have largely plain walls, flooring, and furniture. If you are placing multiple cushions on your sofa, go for a mixture of plain and patterned designs to avoid an overly busy result.

Make use of shape and size

The shape and size of your cushions can be used to layer up your sofa and make it look inviting. Larger square cushions can be placed behind smaller rectangular or round cushions for example. The bigger your sofa, the more cushions you can use, but there should still be enough room to sit down easily.

Experiment with different arrangements

There are endless possibilities when it comes to arranging cushions, from a more formal look to the comfy and casual. You could simply arrange a pair of matching cushions at either end of the sofa for a neat and orderly look.

If your home has more of a country cottage vibe, then groups of overlapping cushions in a variety of sizes, shapes, colours, and textures may create a more relaxed and lived in feel.

For a larger sofa, a trio of different sized and coloured cushions grouped at opposite corners looks cosy yet still provides a pleasing symmetry.
